“Djam” is an elegy for all the expellees, past and present, who were forced to leave their country but who kept their homeland in their hearts and souls. An elegy, told in the rhythm of rebetiko, called “Greek blues” music of the Greeks expelled from Izmir. It is also a story about borderlands, fringes, a mix of cultures impossible to separate, freedom to travel and explore. An expedition to Istanbul for a rare part needed to run uncle Kakourgos’ boat becomes an extraordinary journey, during which the Greek Djam meets the young Frenchwoman Avril. Avril is a volunteer who helps migrants, but she lost her backpack and money and she needs a help for herself. Djam surrounds her with care and together they hike the trail that migrants follow to Europe.
