DESCRIPTION

Batsheva Dance Company from Tel Aviv is a group recognized as one of the most interesting phenomena in contemporary dance theatre. Batsheva has achieved worldwide success working under the direction of renowned choreographer Ohad Naharin, creator of the Gaga movement language. Gaga teaches dancers to understand and listen to their own bodies, but also to co-exist and co-feel as a team. In Ohad Naharin’s “YAG”, Batsheva’s first production adapted especially for the screen, Naharin uses cinematic language to communicate his work both as director and choreographer. The disappearance of the stage, now replaced by the cinematic frame, creates a direct encounter with the dancers. Video artist Roee Shalti, who regularly films Batsheva, filmed and edited the piece with Naharin. The bare space, using the same lighting throughout, is the setting for refined movement. “YAG” by Ohad Naharin is performed by six Batsheva dancers from season 2020/2021: Yael Ben Ezer, Sean Howe, Londiwe Khoza, Igor Ptashenchuk, Yoni (Yonatan) Simon and Hani Sirkis.

DIRECTOR
Ohad Naharin is a choreographer, the creator of the Gaga movement language, and former Artistic Director of Batsheva Dance Company. Born in 1952 in Mizra, Israel, he began his dance career with Batsheva in 1974 and made his choreographic debut in New York in 1980. In 1990 Naharin was appointed Artistic Director of Batsheva Dance Company and established its junior division, Batsheva – the Young Ensemble. He has created over thirty works for both companies and set pieces on other companies including Nederlands Dans Theater, the Paris Opera Ballet, and Les Grand Ballets Canadiens de Montréal. In addition to his stagework, Naharin developed Gaga, the innovative movement research and daily training of Batsheva’s dancers that has spread globally among both dancers and non-dancers. After almost thirty years of leading Batsheva, Naharin stepped down as Artistic Director in 2018, though he continues to serve as House Choreographer. Batsheva will also continue to be the home of Ohad’s research, development, and teaching of Gaga. A citizen of both Israel and the United States, Naharin currently lives in Israel with his wife, dancer and costume designer Eri Nakamura, and their daughter, Noga.
